Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, XL Axiata

Indonesia is more than 17,000 islands, and most visitors see only a few of them. Jakarta, Yogyakarta and the volcanoes of Java, Lombok and the Gili islands, Labuan Bajo for Komodo, sometimes Sulawesi or Raja Ampat. Coverage is good in the cities and very uneven between islands.

Which network reaches furthest

Telkomsel has the widest footprint across the outer islands. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and XL, now part of XLSmart, are strong on Java and in the larger cities. On a trip that goes beyond Java and Bali, the network behind your plan matters more than the gigabytes.

The 90 day IMEI rule

Indonesia registers the IMEI of foreign phones used with Indonesian SIM cards. Visitors can use a local SIM for up to 90 days without registering; after that, an unregistered phone is blocked on local networks, and expensive phones can attract import duty when registered.

A travel eSIM roams as a foreign line, so the local IMEI registration does not apply to it. For most holidays the 90 day window is long enough either way.

Java overland

The route from Jakarta or Yogyakarta to Borobudur, Prambanan and Mount Bromo is covered along the roads. The Bromo viewpoints and the Ijen crater before dawn have weaker signal. Download maps and tickets in the hotel.

Komodo, Gili and the boat days

Labuan Bajo has good coverage. Out on the Komodo boat trips and between the Gili islands and Lombok, expect signal near the islands and little in between. Liveaboard boats rarely have usable wifi.

No Indonesian number

A data eSIM does not give you a +62 number. Gojek and Grab work over data, but some local services want a local number for SMS codes.
