eSIM for Canada
Canada is the second largest country in the world and most of it has no mobile signal at all. Networks follow the population, which sits in a band along the US border. Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary are as well covered as any city in Europe. The Trans-Canada Highway between them is not.
For European and British travellers, Canada sits outside every home roaming allowance and is usually billed in a long haul zone. That is the part a travel eSIM fixes. It does not add towers where there are none.

Where you are travelling from changes the answer
Many US phone plans already include Canada, sometimes with a data cap or reduced speed after a threshold. If you are coming from the United States, check your plan before buying anything.
UK, EU and Australian plans generally do not include Canada. Daily roaming passes add up quickly over a two or three week road trip, which is the typical Canadian itinerary.
The long drives
Between towns in the Prairies, along the north shore of Lake Superior and on the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper, expect long sections with no signal on any network. Download offline maps for the whole route and tell someone when you expect to arrive.
National parks
Banff town has good coverage. Much of the backcountry does not. The same applies to Jasper, Yoho and the parks of Atlantic Canada. Park visitor centres and many lodges have wifi, which is where most visitors check the weather and trail conditions.

The networks
Rogers, Bell and Telus run the three national networks. Freedom Mobile and Videotron are strong in some provinces. A travel eSIM connects to one or more of the national networks, and which one matters most in rural areas, so check it before you buy if you are driving far from the cities.
No Canadian number
A data eSIM does not give you a Canadian +1 number. Canada and the United States share the +1 prefix, but a US number is not a Canadian one either. For calls to hotels and car rental desks, messaging apps over data are the usual workaround.
